The Format Never Changed

I learned design in 1988 by drawing Metal band logos freehand. Not long after, I got a tour of the back rooms at the local newspaper, where a small team of paste-up designers sat in the smoke and built tomorrow’s ads by hand, one waxed galley at a time.
Then came the Mac SE. Then Photoshop, Illustrator, and QuarkXPress. Then the internet. Then Creative Suite, then Creative Cloud. Then Figma, Canva, Pixelmator, and a dozen more I have since forgotten the passwords to. Now I am working alongside AI.
Here is the part that stops me.
Across every one of those eras, I was building the same ad. Catchy headline, eye-catching visual, call to action. Print, video, digital, whatever, wherever. The formula never moved an inch.
What moved was the challenge underneath it.
A magazine ad was a one-off. You got it right, you sent it off, and it lived on that page forever whether you liked it or not. Then ads got dynamic.
Now the reigning king is scale. The same idea, correct in forty places at once, on brand, on time, every week, without the wheels coming off.
Every tool I just listed showed up to answer the challenge of its own season. Not to make the ad. To make the ad possible at the scale that season demanded. The paste-up table answered one challenge. QuarkXPress answered another. AI is answering the era of scale.
That is why I refuse to treat AI as a threat to the creativity brands pay Brand Shepherd for.
Nobody hires us to hand them ads that AI made. They hire us for the judgment that decides what the headline should say, which photo has earned the space, and whether the whole thing actually sounds like them.
We are still making the stuff. AI is carrying the weight underneath it, the same way every tool before it did.
The formula has outlived every tool that ever served it. I expect it will outlive this one, too.
